Facial Burns

MASSAGE
Generally two to three weeks after the wound has closed completely and the skin is fully healed you can begin to a
pply firm, direct pressure using small circular or linear motions with the finger pads for around 5 up to 30 minutes, 1–3 times a day.   Start slowly and increase as you are able.  The best practice is to u
se a fragrance free moisturizer like Eucerin brand ORIGINAL HEALING to massage the scar daily to soften, flatten, and desensitize tissue.  This breaks down collagen adhesions, improves flexibility, and reduces pain and itching. It also increases blood circulation, which helps prevent hypertrophic (raised) scarring and improves the range of motion in damaged areas

SUNSCREEN
Newly healed grafts cannot protect themselves from UV light, which causes the graft to turn even darker.   Grafts on the face are often extra visible due to hyperpigmentation on a new graft. This can take months to years to repair and can add more stress so be proactive in protecting your skin.  Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sunscreens are recommended for maximum protection.    There are many sunscreens on the market but the Rejuvaskin brand is one of my favorite.  However, always keep in mind that sunscreen + an umbrella or hat are imperative every time you go outside.  Be careful when sitting in a car in direct sunlight as well.  Look for hats and umbrellas that offer SPF protection when available.

SILICONE GEL AND GEL SHEETS
Silicone Gel Sheets applied for at least 12 hours daily can help flatten, soften, and reduce discoloration in scars.  Apply the silicone gel sheet to clean, dry skin and leave for 12 hours (can be worn under compression garment)  Remove the sheet, wash, dry, and either move to a new area or store away until the next day.   You can also purchase silicone in gel form to be used either alone or in conjunction with gel sheets.  12 hours gel sheet, 12 hours gel   Always begin with clean skin each time.

CUSTOM MADE COMPRESSION GARMENTS
Custom made compression garments are a key part of healing. They are generally worn 23 hours a day for up to two years. The garments can be worn once the skin has healed over - generally 4-6 weeks after injury. The primary goal of compression garments is to flatten and soften raised scars by limiting collagen production in the scar tissue. Consistent pressure helps manage the intense, often painful itching associated with healing burn wounds. By keeping the skin soft and pliable and under tension, garments prevent the skin from tightening over joints, which helps maintain range of motion.
Compression garments protect newly grafted or fragile skin from injury and reduce skin sensitivity and can reduce swelling, particularly in the limbs.
